The New Evangelization through Catholic Radio

Doug Sherman
Founder & CEO of Immaculate Heart Radio

Doug Sherman entered the world of Catholic media after hearing Pope John Paul II’s New Evangelization challenge at World Youth Day in 1993 when he asked everyone to “do something to bring Christ to the world”. Prior to this he had been a homebuilder with no radio experience.  Doug soon launched into the effort to start one Catholic radio station. That first Immaculate Heart Radio station, KIHM 920 AM Reno, was inaugurated in 1997 and was at that time only the seventh Catholic radio station in the nation, compared to over 1500 Protestant radio stations. Today, Immaculate Heart Radio’s broadcast signals cover over 50,000,000 people with 33 stations and translators throughout the western United States, including Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Diego, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Salt Lake City, and most of New Mexico. KHJ AM 930 in Los Angeles began broadcasting Immaculate Heart Radio programming in November of 2014.

Doug was born and raised in Pasadena where he met and married his high school sweetheart, Janet. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Southern California, while Janet graduated from UCLA. They have been married for 48 years, live in Lake Tahoe, and have 4 children and 11 grandchildren. Together with another couple in Lake Tahoe they started Thomas Aquinas School, and were founding Board members of the National Association of Private Catholic and Independent Schools. They are also members of Legatus, and he is a co-founder and current Chairman of the Catholic Radio Association, an organization that has been vitally important in the growth of Catholic Radio from only six stations in 1997 to now over 300 stations and translators throughout the country. Thirty-three of those stations and translators are Immaculate Heart Radio stations. Immaculate Heart Radio is a 501c3 non-profit religious corporation.
