Obergefell vs. Hodges

The United States Supreme Court radically redefined marriage with this decision on June 26, 2015.

What does this mean? For our practices? For our families? For our businesses, schools, hospitals and nonprofit organizations? For our churches, and communities of faith?

Michael W. Caspino

Michael Caspino is a Shareholder with the Buchalter Nemer law firm. He is Chair of the firm’s Non-Profit and Religious Organizations Industry Specialty Group. For more than 20 years, he has successfully defended the Roman Catholic Church throughout the United States. Additionally, Mr. Caspino has served as General Counsel to the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange. He has extensive experience in advising Bishops from throughout the country on legal and management issues.

In 2014, Mr. Caspino successfully litigated on behalf of Archbishop Paul Coakley of the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City. In this landmark case, Mr. Caspino used novel canon and civil legal theories to force the return of a stolen consecrated Eucharistic host. The host had been stolen by a group of Satanists who had planned to desecrate it during a “Black Mass.” Mr. Caspino successfully convinced a Judge to compel the return of the host, saving it from desecration.

On behalf of Roman Catholic entities, Mr. Caspino is litigating the first lawsuits brought to challenge the Church’s position on same-sex marriage.

Mr. Caspino holds several leadership roles in community organizations. He was co-chair of the successful campaign to raise $100,000,000 for the acquisition and renovation of the Crystal Cathedral. He is the founding President of the Orange County Canyons Legatus Chapter and serves on the Board of Directors for Serra Catholic School, the largest Catholic elementary school in America.

Mr. Caspino has been quoted by numerous media outlets as an expert on the laws relating to religious organizations. These media outlets include The Wall Street Journal, The Los Angeles Times, The National Catholic Register, Catholic Radio, EWTN and ABC News.
